Winter… dark and cold, long time since last update. Now we are on our second winter of construction. I’ve had several long colds with bad cough that stopped a lot of work during November and December. Now in January I have finally been able to get things going again. Sadly I missed warmer weather during December when it was easier/possible to build with LECA blocks and mortar.

We’ve had several weeks with temperatures below -10, hard to work with many layers of clothes. Last week has been warmer so I have been able to work with the LECA blocks below the greenhouse walls. The snow we had for some weeks has melted now. Currently very windy.

It’s obvious that I don’t have as much energy now as during the summer. Everything seems very daunting currently, too many things to do. Trying to focus on one task at the time, any progress is good progress. If anyone want’s the help out and learn a bit about the nature house concept at the same time, let me know! 🙂

The snow made it possible to do some skiiing. Just enough snow, some gravel sticking up which provides surprise falls.

Snow vs greenhouse for the first time. Two more windows has broken, four in total. Not sure why but it could be stress on the glass when the support under the walls are not complete.

Quite cozy inside with the snow on the roof. Just 1-2 degrees warmer inside since there are still big openings under the greenhouse. The snow has slowly been sliding down the roof. When the warm weather hit it melted quite fast.

The frame of the house is mostly complete now, only balconys and pergola missing. They are still to be delivered from Estonia. Two more loads to go. Doors, windows, floors, roof material etc. Storms in December stopped delivery over the Baltic sea before Christmas. Now they have some problems with sick managers at the factory. Aiming for next delivery in february of windows, doors and roof materials.

New views from up on the roof. That is one of the cooles things about the house I think, all the different views from all the storeys. The joists are cut with an angle so any water drains of. Good space on the roof, the glass is ca 1 m above the roof at the edges, so most of the roof is standing height.

Currently trying to finish the mortaring where the east growing/water cleaning beds will be, it would be nice to be able to start growing this spring but there is lots of work before that. All LECA blocks to finish in this part, fix any bad morar joints, seal the leca block with cement mixture. After that level the ground, cover with rubber sheat, collection pipes, gravel, spreader pipes, more gravel. Also drill for water, get power to the water pump. Actually I should finish the whole tech house below.

Here I’m building a permanent opening to be able to access pipe connections. Three large pipes are below the surface and acts as culverts to the tech house below. In those large pipes I’ll run other pipes later. Sewer pipe is already in, later I’ll put electricity, water, heating etc in there. The LECA blocks will also act as divider between the two planned growing beds on this side of the house. The wood OSB boards were temporary and will be removed.

Time flies! It’s already November 20.

Winter is close, below 0 today and dark outside at 4 in the afternoon. We’re trying to finish things that can’t be done in the winter. Mortar does not like freezing temperatures. Finished the leca blocks for the smaller ”water” house at least. It will house water techie stuff and part of the water recycling system. More blocks are needed below the green house walls, we’ll see how the weather stays. It’s possible to mix the mortar with anti freeze and warm water but it’s difficult and expensive.

On the house we are almost finished with the logs, it’s been more difficult the higher we get. Now there is only one log still to put in place. Great to start seeing the finished shape of the house. Currently working on the roof joists as well.

Sad days in the world, terror and hate everywhere, Paris burning. So many people on the run. Sweden is apparently running out of space to house refugees now, some have to sleep outside or in tents. Up to 2000 ppl has been arriving per day, the rest of the EU (some exceptions exists) is mostly fighting about keeping the refugees out. Is the european idea failing? Society is becoming more polarized.

Anyway, onwards to the pictures.

View to the pasture outside. First broken window, probably due to preassure on the side of the window from the frame. Another one has broken next to it as well now. Monitoring the situation, can’t replace them yet anyway.

Our neighbour have gotten their house a few weeks ago. Prefab, so it already looks finished, Linda is envious.

Autumn has arrived, time for an update. Crisp autumn days have replaced the summer, some frost has even turned up. Nice and warm in the greenhouse, today over 25 degrees.

The roof of the garage is almost finished, now we need the panelling to continue.

We’ve done some colour tests for the panelling on the house and garage, with unconclusive results. More tests needed but we’ll probably use an oil based stain.

Log walls continue to grow slowly, we’re up to level 29 in some places, 34 is the final layer. Not so many logs left!

Some quick pictures of the status so far. Working on the second floor now and made some good progress today. At some places there are less than 8 logs to go. A few more logs in the garage then we get to open the last pack of logs.

Another excellent day to havet the greenhouse, it has been pouring down today but we are unaffected by the rain.

Got the garage doors installed too, nice to be able to lock. One did get slightly damaged in the heavy winds during the week, will have to replace some screws the got bent. Oiled the doors with linseed oil from ekologiska byggvaruhuset, nice stuff.

Switching to english for our international visitors… Short recap of the project: Green house with a log house inside. Eden project in small scale. Positive sides are environmentally friendly, recycling of waste water, less energy consumption, home grown veggies, large living space as soon as the temperature is ok, cool house. Negatives: Risk of too high temperature during hot summer days, expensive.

So, 5 weeks of vacation has come to an end. The greenhouse was finished in early July by Drivadan and we could start building the log house. The first 12 shifts went up in a week but then it became harder. Especially the 10 meter long logs became too dangerous to lift high so we spent more than a week building a winch/hoist/traverse system to help lift and secure the larger logs. After that it was a little difficult to ”tie” together the different pars of the house, i.e. over the doorways. The walls had shifted a little during construktion so we had to use a jack or winsch to push or pull the walls to the correct position.

Eventually we made it up to level 16/17 and could lay in the floor joist for the first floor. Now we could build a temporary floor to be able to continue the logs for the second floor. Nice to see the house become a reality! Many tonnes of wood moved.

Relly nice to follow the wildlife around the house. One morning the barn swallows had left their nests and the young sat in our birch begging for food. Other days the pied wagtails and common buzzards left their nests.

En uppdatering från värmen. Kim och Andy från Drivadan blev klara idag med växthuset! Tack för bra jobb! De har jobbat på bra trots hettan, uppåt 35 grader i växthuset. 100% luftfuktighet om det nu stämmer. Jag har svettats floder men de har jobbat på fint.

Vi har börjat lägga ut stockar och börjar nu se var rummen hamnar. 4 skift klara på sina ställen. Kul men svettigt i värmen just nu. Sämre (men bättre för oss) väder framöver verkar det som. En sopig borrmaskin och två billiga träborrar slutkörda redan…

Drivadan monterade ganska mycket av växthuset på ca en vecka. Dessvärre blev Kim lite blåslagen av några rasande glasrutor och de fick bryta och åka hem. Nu kommer de tillbaka i veckan och slutför bygget. Just nu har vi en stor amfiteater eftersom ena gaveln inte är monterad än. Häftig utsikt!

Senaste tiden har vi satsat på garagebygge, vi har släpat stockar och fått ihop i stort sett hela garagestommen. Mycket timmer har behövt flyttas också för att få ordning på pelaren i garaget. Som tur var är Drivadan färdiga på plattan så vi har börjat flytta in timmer.

Garaget växer.

En gammal kanotvagn med lite träbitar blev en perfekt vagn för stockarna. Lätt att flytta de tunga stockarna. Stockarna till garaget och huset ligger på högst ca 60 kg. Garaget är av mindre dimension men de längsta stockarna är 7 meter långa, huset verkar ha max 5 m. Den långa nockbalken på ca 140 kg funkade bra också.

Öppningarna för garageportarna börjar ta form.

Tomas drar i en dymling. De sitter i vartannat hål för att hålla ihop stockarna och stabilisera väggen. Nästa skift sätter man dymlingar i de hålen som inte fick några i varvet innan.

Man börjar få lite utsikt från garaget nu, växthuset i all sin prakt. Dessvärre hade glaset tagit livet av några fåglar så vi spände upp odlingsväv så väggen ska synas. Jag tror de flyger in i växthuset iom att ena gaveln inte är på plats och krockar på insidan. Väven blåste ner ganska snabbt men än har inte några fler döda fåglar hittats, hoppas det håller i sig. Ikväll flög hussvalorna genom växthuset några varv, lite nervöst.

Ett paket flyttat från garageplattan till husplattan. Lite luftigare staplat också så det förhoppningsvis klarar lite väta bättre. Lätt att dra av presenningen så snart vädret är bra. Ännu bättre när glastaket är på plats. Ca 2 ton timmer per paket.

Dags att få upp stora nockbalken, 140 kg+. Har riggat en vinsch som drar den upp längs de två reglarna. Smidigt med elektrisk vinsch, Linda körde och jag styrde balken. Några stopp skruvades fast då och då för säkerhets skull.

Från sidan. Nu är det dags för balkarna som ska ligga mellan nocken och väggarna och sen taket. Portar beställda, dessvärre ska fabriken ha semester så det blir inte leverans förrän augusti.

En snabbpost från bygget. Nu händer det!! Efter mkt kranstrul igår så börjar Drivadan nu montera växthuset. Va stort det blir 🙂

Dags för en uppdatering! Äntligen är allt färdiggjutet som behövs i det här läget. Alla plintar klara, plattan gjuten och formvirke bortrivet.

Plintarna blev i sort sett bra, några formar sprack lite och två plintar hamnade fel men inget som behöver åtgärdas nu i alla fall.

Plattan fick vi till men tyvärr började det regna när vi väntade på att kunna glätta. Det regnade så pass att det inte gick att glätta alls. Vi får se om vi behöver slipa eller flytspackla sedan innan montage av huset kan börja.

Anders (ecorelief) var på besök förra veckan för att titta till utformning av kretsloppssystemet. Nu har vi bestämt hur det ska byggas. Det blir tre växtbäddar som tar upp hela platsen i växthuset åt söder och öster. På så sätt blir det ganska fritt med utformning av planteringar, öppet vatten, stenläggningar etc. Lätt att göra om när vi upptäcker att något hamnat fel. Bäddarna blir delvis fyllda med grus, resten pimpsten. Högst upp pimpsten som har gott om håligheter för mikroorganismer. En decimeter ner ligger spridarrören som portionerar ut vattnet i hela bädden. Därefter resten av växtsubstratet.

I botten ligger EPDM-gummiduk, samma som används till dammar. På den dräneringsrör som samlar in det filtrerade vattnet och för det tillbaka till teknikrummet och vidare till nästa bädd.

Nu rullar det på med flera saker samtidigt, just nu är en lastbil på väg från Estland med första leveransen timmer till garaget, teknikhuset och huset. Leverans måndag morgon, förhoppningsvis kan vi påbörja montage av garaget direkt om vädret tillåter.

Senare på måndagen anländer Drivadan och påbörjar växthusmontaget, planerat ca 4 veckor. Förhoppningsvis får allt material plats på tomten 🙂

Knappt en månad kvar till semestern börjar och det blir heltidsbygge, förhoppningsvis är Drivadan klara då och vi kan börja med huset.

Garageplattan väntar på material och bygge. Första gången den är rensad sen betongen härdade i vintras.
